    2010: Year of the Dog!
Hello and welcome to the first edition of my portrait newsletter! Thank you for signing up to receive this. Your continued support means a great deal to me!
2009 went out strong and so far 2010 has continued the trend. I was extremely busy over Christmas working on lots of portrait commissions. I completed my most ambitious piece, a family portrait of twelve! Click here to check it out.
Commissions have continued to come in steadily, including three dog portraits. It’s been awhile since I got the chance to draw animals, and it’s been a lot of fun.
I also have another exciting project in the works. A friend of mine is getting married and has commissioned me to do a large oil painting of an African sunset. I’m really looking forward to getting started on this.
If you have visited my website lately, you will have noticed that it’s changed a bit. I’ve added a blog component on the main page, which means that every time I finish a new commission, you get to see it! Check back often, as I update it frequently. Click here to visit my website.
That’s all I have to say for now. Have a look at the three dogs of 2010 below, and have a great day!
    Sincerely,
    Miranda Aschenbrenner

    Considering a Portrait?
Why Portraits are Better Than Photos
There are two different kinds of photos: snapshots and posed. Snapshots are the best for capturing personalities, but often have poor lighting and composition. Posed photos have the right lighting, but people’s expressions are usually forced.
One of the comments I get a lot is “Wow, it looks even better than the picture!” That’s the beauty of a hand-drawn portrait. It improves upon the photo. When I draw a portrait, I take the best elements from the photo I’ve given, and then fix the flaws.
Hand-drawn portraits combine the natural expressions of snapshots and the lighting and composition of posed shots.
They really are the best of both worlds!

    In Other News…
One of my recent abstract paintings, Room to Breathe, has been selected for the U8 Event at SOPA Fine Arts in Kelowna, BC.

This exhibit features over three hundred paintings by 80 international artists, all for less than $800.
